WIN FOR ASO AND VAVA, SPANISH TITLE FOR MACHADO AND DURÁN

Guillermo Aso and Filip Vava claimed victory in the second race of the Iberian Supercars, Supercars Jarama RACE, and Campeonato de Portugal de Velocidade event held at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, but third place was enough for César Machado and Jan Durán to clinch the Spain’s Supercars Jarama RACE GT4 title.

The Spanish car duo needed both to win in the Iberian season showdown and for their rivals from Speedy Motorsport to finish off the podium to secure the Supercars Jarama RACE title, and starting from pole position was a boost to their chances.

The start went smoothly for the NM Racing Team driver, who held the lead, though some incidents ensued behind, with Carlos Vieira (Toyota GR Supra GT4 from Toyota Gazoo Racing Caetano Portugal) and Andy Cantu (Mercedes AMG GT4 from NM Racing Team) coming off worst after a collision that forced both to retire and led to a lengthy Safety Car period.

When racing resumed, a fierce battle developed between Filip Vava and Francisco Mora (Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 from Veloso Motorsport), with the Portuguese driver making a bold move at the Torre hairpin, seizing the lead.

However, the Veloso Motorsport driver could not pull away, with his rival close behind until the mandatory pit stops. After a five-second handicap from finishing second in the morning race, the Mercedes AMG GT4, now driven by Guillermo Aso, returned to the track in the lead, which he held until the chequered flag, crossing the line with a five-second advantage over Gonçalo Fernandes, who did his series debut in the Veloso Motorsport Porsche.

In third place were César Machado and Jan Durán, who, after winning the Iberian Supercars title, also secured the Supercars Jarama RACE title in GT4 Pro and the overall GT4 category. However, the Toyota GR Supra GT4 duo did not have it easy, making the required overtake to finish on the podium’s bottom step in the penultimate lap, just enough if Guillermo Aso and Filip Vava won the race.

In GT4 Bronze, Jorge Rodrigues and Patrick Cunha had a clean run in their Audi R8 LMS GT4 from Veloso Motorsport, recovering from fourteenth on the grid to finish ninth, which earned them the GT4 Bronze victory and secured the division title in the Iberian Supercars.

Alberto de Martín and Nil Montserrat, who finished second in GT4 Bronze, fell short of the Iberian title but were crowned champions of the division in Supercars Jarama RACE.

Keith Gatehouse and Igor Sorokin added another GT4 Am win, securing the GT4 Am title in both the Iberian Supercars and Supercars Jarama RACE – an impressive achievement given it was the debut outing for NM Racing Team’s Mercedes AMG GT4.

Daniel Teixeira continued his high-level performance, crossing the line in sixteenth place overall and winning both the overall Touring Cars category and the TCR division, allowing him to retain the TCR title in the Iberian Supercars for 2023.

Ruben Silva and Rodrigo Ferreira emerged strongest in the TC class and among FPAK Junior Team young drivers, defeating João Oliveira and Gabriel Caçoilo, while Henrique Ventura Oliveira and Henrique Moura Oliveira took the third step on the podium.

With this weekend's results, João Oliveira claimed the TC title in the Iberian Supercars.

The GTX category was won by Mikkel Kristensen and Manuel Cañizares in the Ligier JS2R from Chefo Sport, completing a nearly flawless weekend with two wins. Tomás Pinto Abreu and Simon Moore, in the Ginetta G50 from Tockwith Motorsports, also had reason to celebrate after securing the GTC division title in both the Iberian Supercars and Supercars Jarama RACE.

Rui Miritta secured every title he contested this year, finishing this afternoon with yet another victory. The Monteiros Competições Porsche 911 driver celebrated championships in both GTC and Cup in the Iberian Supercars and Supercars Jarama RACE, joined on the podium by Dave Benett and Marcus Fothergill from Tockwith Motorsports. Frederico Formiga and Frederico Castro from Art of Speed did not take part in the race due to clutch issues.

The Campeonato de Portugal de Velocidade will hold its season finale at the Estoril Circuit from 30 November to 1 December.
