The Portuguese motor racing historic name Gianfranco Motorsport is set to return to the national and Iberian racing scene, with the entry of a Toyota GR Supra GT4 EVO2 in the 2025 Iberian Supercars, Campeonato de Portugal de Velocidade, and Supercars España.
The team based in Maia was a consistent presence on Portuguese circuits from the 1980s, with founder and driver Carlos Rodrigues delivering standout performances on home soil. He clinched the national Touring Car championship title in 1991 at the wheel of a Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth, a car he also raced in the Guia Race at the Macau Grand Prix.
‘Ginho’ Rodrigues, son of Carlos Rodrigues, took over Gianfranco Motorsport in 2014 and is now leading the team back to the big stage, set to make its GT racing debut in the 2025 season. This will also mark the team’s first participation in the Iberian Supercars, Campeonato de Portugal de Velocidade, and Supercars España.
“We are very happy to join the Iberian Supercars, the Campeonato de Portugal de Velocidade, and Supercars España after being away from top-level racing for so many years. The championship is extremely well organised and competitive, and this is where we wanted to be. Now that we have managed to put everything together, we are very excited”, said the Team Principal after the team completed its first shakedown with the GR Supra EVO2 last week at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve.
Gianfranco Motorsport will announce its driver line-up at a later date but remains ambitious about its debut in the competition. “Our goals are the same as always in every category we compete in. We know the competition will be fierce, as seen in 2024, but I believe we have the tools to fight for the top position”, ‘Ginho’ Rodrigues concluded with confidence.
Gianfranco Motorsport will make its debut in the Supercars Endurance series at Portimão on 5th and 6th April, where the season kicks off. However, the team will also be present on 22nd March for the official pre-season test at the Autódromo do Estoril.
