FREE PRACTICE RESULTS HEIGHTEN ANTICIPATION FOR QUALIFYING

The free practice session for the opening round of the Iberian Supercars, the Campeonato de Portugal de Velocidade, and Supercars España has already taken place at the Autódromo Internacional Algarve, building high anticipation for qualifying.

Teams initially took to the track on slick tyres using Pirelli’s new compound. However, midway through the session, a passing shower dampened the circuit. Some drivers opted to switch to wet tyres, while others chose to continue on slicks.

The fastest times were set before the rain hit the Portimão track. Mathieu Martins and Roberto Faria, driving a Racar Motorsport Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT4, topped the timesheets, beating José Carlos Pires and Tomás Guedes in the Speedy Motorsport Toyota GR Supra GT4 EVO2 by just 0.167 seconds.

Close behind was another Japanese machine - the Toyota Gazoo Racing Caetano Portugal entry driven by Francisco Mora and Francisco Abreu - who were only 0.3 seconds off the pace.

In the GT4 Pro-Am category, Guillermo Aso and Filip Vava were quickest in the NM Racing Team’s Mercedes-AMG GT4, finishing half a second ahead of their closest rivals, Patrick Cunha and Jorge Rodrigues, in the Veloso Motorsport-run Porsche Cayman CS RS. The 2024 GT4 Bronze title-winning duo endured a frustrating session as their German car stopped on track due to a steering-related technical issue.

Series newcomers Álvaro Lobera and Gonzalo de Andrés set the pace in GT4 Bronze, driving one of the McLaren Artura GT4s fielded by McLaren Barcelona – SMC Motorsport. In the GT4 Am category, it was Ruben Vaquinhas and Pedro Bastos Rezende who came out on top in an Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT4 run by Gianfranco Motorsport.

Teixeira Returns in Style

Daniel Teixeira had his first run in the Hyundai Elantra N TCR this Saturday for the 2025 season and showed no signs of lacking winter testing, setting the fastest time among the touring car and GTC category entrants.

The reigning Touring Car Champion, driving for JT59 Racing Team, edged out the Speedy Motorsport Porsche Cayman CS of Pompeu Simões and Duarte Camelo by just 0.558 seconds.

In the Porsche Cup battle, João Posser (Porsche 911 Cup – Veloso Motorsport) came out on top, ahead of Marcus Fothergill and Dave Benett (Porsche 911 Cup – Tockwith Motorsport).

The first of the four qualifying sessions will begin at 15:00, with the remaining three to follow immediately.

All sessions will be streamed live on the championship’s official Instagram account.
